      <head>Historical Note</head>
      <p>The Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) was organized in Spokane in 1895 and has served as
        a lobbying and information organization in support of the mining and smelting interests of
        the Inland Empire. The Association, through research and the publication of its bulletins,
        monitors and interprets national, state, and local legislation that creates an impact on the
        mining and metallurgy industry.</p>

      <p>The collection includes general correspondence from the offices of the Northwest Mining
        Association, 1932-1975; files on national and state legislation affecting the industry,
        including correspondence, clippings, annual reports, and documents; correspondence,
        clippings, and memoranda regarding activities of the Securities and Exchange Commission,
        1950-1969; extensive files concerning wilderness land legislation, including correspondence,
        clippings, documents and reports, and a file of correspondence, clippings, documents, and
        ephemeral items on the mining exhibit organized for Expo ’74.</p>
