        clippings, and other material, relating to Vanek's compilation of articles on Bull River
        Valley history and her book on Noxon, Mont., entitled Behind These Mountains (1986);
        materials concerning the history and activities of U.S. Forest Service and Asarco Inc.
        (formerly American Smelting and Refining Company) mining operations, in the same area; and
        correspondence with various publishers and fund-raising agencies.</abstract>

      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>A Spokane native, Mona Leeson Vanek moved to the Bull River Valley, MT in 1945. She has
        served at various times as clerk to the public school system, a technical writer, and a
        newspaper correspondent. Vanek published historical articles and collected reminiscences and
        documents on the Bull River Valley region. Her work on Noxon, MT, <title>Behind These
          Mountains</title>, was published in 1986.</p>

    <scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_">
      <p>The collection consists of Vanek’s research files; letters, oral interviews, newspaper
        clippings, and documents used by her in the compilation of her book and articles on Bull
        River Valley history. Also included is information concerning the history and activities of
        the U.S. Forest Service in that area as well as the ASARCO mining operations. There is also
        Vanek’s correspondence with various publishers and grant-funding agencies.</p>
