Professor of surgery, University of Washington; pioneer in transplant surgery (1928-1995).
A native of Spokane, Washington, Marchioro grew up in Butte, Montana. He received his undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University and his medical degree from St. Louis University. He began his career in Colorado as assistant chief of surgery at the then Veterans Administration Hospital, 1962-1967. He was recruited to that position by Dr. Thomas E. Starzl, another pioneer in transplant surgery, who credited Marchioro with contributing to the "first real consistent success in kidney transplantation," because his work helped refine immunosuppressant drug therapy. In 1967 Marchioro joined the University of Washington Medical School where he established and led a program that performed the first kidney transplants in the Pacific Northwest. He was chief of the Division of Transplantation 1971-1988, and vice chairman of the department of surgery 1983-1991.
