      <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
    
         <p>Bettina Ehrlich was born in Vienna, Austria in 1903. She studied art at the Lyceum and Kunstgewerbeschule (school of arts and crafts) in Vienna and exhibited work in Berlin and Paris.</p>
         <p>She married sculptor George Ehrlich in 1930, and they both emigrated to England in 1938 after the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany. </p>
         <p>In London during the Second World War, Ehrlich began to write and illustrate children's books, publishing under the pen name "Bettina." She worked in a variety of media including oil painting, watercolor, drawing, and various printmaking methods. </p>
         <p>Ehrlich died in 1985.</p>

         <p>The collection includes Bettina Ehrlich's papers for the publication <emph render="italic">For the Leg of a Chicken</emph> (London: Collins, 1960). Materials include handwritten drafts, sketches, and a dummy with ink and watercolor illustrations.</p>
