White colonists practiced enslavement in the American colonies, and later the United States of America, from approximately 1619 until passage of the 13th Amendment in 1865. These colonists participated in the Atlantic slave trade of people predominantly from central and western parts of Africa, although colonists also enslaved Indigenous peoples in the Americas. Enslavement involved dehumanization, withholding of civil rights, forced labor, torture, rape, murder, forced separation of families and other violence.
This collection consists of a manuscript copy of William Galt’s farming activities and business accounts at Fluvanna County, Virginia. It also includes John Hartwell Cocke’s directions for enforcing Black enslavement on plantations.
