Fabritus Reynolds Smith (1819-1898) was born in Rochester, New York, and came to Oregon in 1846 with Joseph Waldo. He worked in and near Salem as a teamster, and farmed on his land claim. He was twice married, first to Virgilia Pringle, then to Sarah E. Watt.

The collection consists of diaries in which Smith made brief record of his everyday activities. With his diaries is his account book, 1863, as supervisor of Road District 12, Marion County. There is a folder of miscellaneous papers including personal correspondence and legal deeds related to Smith's land claim. Also present is a land office deed, signed by Ulysses S. Grant legitimizing the claim of Joseph Waldo, which was then transferred to Smith.

Filed with the F. R. Smith diaries are the diaries of a son, Hamlin F. Smith, 1878, 1879, 1881-1883, 1885, 1886, 1894-1896, 1899, 1902. The entries in these diaries are exceptionally terse.
