journalist and author Shelby Scates' papers regarding research about American
lawyer and politician Warren G. Magnuson.
Political journalist and writer Shelby Scates (1931-2013) wrote for
the
Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Scates was born in Obion
County, Tennessee and studied history and philosophy at the University of
Washington, graduating in 1954. He authored a number of books including
Warren G. Magnuson and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century
America (1997),
War and Politics by Other Means: A Journalist's Memoir
(2000), and
Maurice Rosenblatt and the Fall of Joseph McCarthy
(2006).

Knudtson, and Charles Hodde. The notes and research files refer to the
interviews and other historical research conducted while writing the book.
