      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2">
         <p>Political journalist and writer Shelby Scates (1931-2013) wrote for
		  the 
		<title linktype="simple">Seattle Post-Intelligencer</title>. Scates was born in Obion
		County, Tennessee and studied history and philosophy at the University of
		Washington, graduating in 1954. He authored a number of books including 
		<title linktype="simple">Warren G. Magnuson and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century
		  America</title> (1997), 
		<title linktype="simple">War and Politics by Other Means: A Journalist's Memoir</title>
		(2000), and 
		<title linktype="simple">Maurice Rosenblatt and the Fall of Joseph McCarthy</title>
		(2006).</p>

		  America</title>, a biography about the life of Magnuson. The sound recordings
		are interviews with Magnuson’s colleagues and friends including Gerald
		Grinstein, Gerald Johnson, Tom Allison, Carol Parker Cahill, Maude Elaine
		Knudtson, and Charles Hodde. The notes and research files refer to the
		interviews and other historical research conducted while writing the book.</p>
