Karl Wilson Gehrkens was a prominent music educator. He designed a degree program in music education at Oberlin College, Ohio, and served as its head for 35 years.

The collection contains copies of short philosophical essays which Gehrkens wrote on music, life, and education, including The Story of My Books, an essay on the books authored by Gehrkens. Also included are a letter, dated Nov. 17, 1969, from Gehrkens to Robert E. Nye, professor of music education at the University of Oregon, and a program for A Weekend with Karl W.
