Witmark & Sons, NY, NY), 1938, from the movie “Cowboy from Brooklyn” (1938), which was based on “Howdy Stranger.” “This is the first thing I wrote in collaboration with a young actor friend, Bob Sloane. I was thirty at the time and had not written a line since college (Dartmouth 1928) and had flopped in half a dozen businesses. The story is mine, the words mostly Bob’s. We wrote it in two months, sold it in two weeks. It ran seventy-five performances on Broadway and was sold to Warner Brothers for four thousand dollars. They made two pictures [“Cowboy from Brooklyn” and “Two Guys form Texas”] out of it without having to pay us any more royalties. Times have changed. The screenplay of one of these pictures is attached, plus a review of the stage play. Of the nine critics eight thought it was awful, but this discerning fellow [Douglas Gilbert] on the World Telegram (an influential review at the time) thought it was just fine. He lost his job soon after.”

The 1963 feature film credits James Algar as the screenwriter.
