Randy Palmer was born on March 28, 1972 in Helena, Montana. In 1990, Palmer moved to the rural community of Dillon, Montana to study education at the University of Montana Western. As freshman, a friend loaned him a copy of
Maxim Rocknroll
(MMR), a monthly San Francisco zine dedicated to hardcore and punk music coverage. After that, Palmer became enthralled by zine culture and its exploration of all things underground.

In 1993, Palmer left school and decided to pursue music. Moving first to Alaska and then settling in Missoula, Montana, Palmer played in a host of punk and grunge bands. In addition to reading
Maxim Rocknroll
regularly, Palmer began combing zine reviews and ordering copies of other zines that sounded interesting. The fascination led him to create his first zine in 1994.

From 1995 - 2001, while based in Missoula, he wrote and illustrated a zine called
Spaghetti Dinner and Dancing
. Adopting the pen name Randy Spaghetti, Palmer got the idea for the zine's name after driving by a marquee at the Higgins Street Senior Center that advertised spaghetti dinner and dancing. Over the course of six years, Palmer put out fifteen issues of the zine, which focused primarily on punk music and comics.
Spaghetti Dinner and Dancing
cost $1.00, but Palmer also accepted trades for other zines as payment.

In 2000, Palmer started another music zine called
Darlene RocknRoll Fanzine
and put out five issues. Then in 2009, he started a zine review blog and invited people from all over to submit their work.

Palmer currently lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

The Randy Palmer Correspondence and Zine Collection includes all fifteen issues of his own zine,
Spaghetti Dinner and Dancing
, as well as a large assortment of other zines from around the United States. The bulk of the collection was produced between 1994 and 2001, although the dates on some material span from 1990 to 2009. In addition to the zines themselves, the collection houses Palmer's correspondence with fellow zine creators, editors, and contributors. It also contains fan mail and letters from readers, a few miscellaneous photos, and other mementos.

The zines in this collection cover a wide range of topics. Music, literature, politics, sexuality, crime and legal justice, LGBQT issues, activism, anarchism, humor, art, feminism, travel, youth alienation and disillusionment, philosophy, photography, religion, climate, animal rights, and technology represent a broad sample of themes.
