Lithographs and woodcuts created by Helen Neilson Rhodes, a Pacific Northwest artist.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1875, Helen Neilson Rhodes was a painter, a block printer, a lithographer, an illustrator and a teacher. Best known for her blockprint illustrations forPaul Bunyan Comes West, she also won prizes in a number of contests--including the Seattle Art Institute, the International Salon of Watercolors and the Northwest Artists Annual Exhibition.

She began teaching at the University of Washington in 1921 as an Instructor of Drawing. In 1927, she became an Assistant Professor in the school of Fine Arts and remained in that position for the next ten years. Both she and her students contributed illustrations to the University publications12 Bible Illustrations,Four and Twenty Blockprints for Four and Twenty RhymesandA Blockprint History of the Northwest.

Rhodes died in her home on June 16, 1938. Her obituary, published inThe Washington Alumnusin February 1939 reads: "In Miss Rhodes' passing the School of Art and the University lose an enthusiastic and tireless worker, and many individuals a friend of great personal worth."

Both copies of "The Last Load" were gifts to the Art Department Library from Bertha F. Wiese. The collection was transferred to the Henry Art Gallery from the UW Art Library on February 3, 1987. The collection was transferred from the Henry Art Gallery on January 18, 1990.
