      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">William Holmes (1807-1879) was a pioneer and the first sheriff of Clackamas Country. The collection consists of a notice alerting concerned parties to the sale of the Oregon City properties of William Riley by Holmes to settle a debt to John McLoughlin.</abstract>

      <head>Biographical/Historical note</head>
      <p>William Holmes (1807-1879) was a pioneer and the first sheriff of Clackamas Country.</p>
      <p>John McLoughlin (1784-1857) owned a general store in Oregon City that was famous as the last stop on the Oregon Trail. He served as mayor of Oregon City in 1851.</p>

      <p>The collection consists of a three page notice "To all to whom these presents shall come" concerned the sale of the Oregon City properties of William Riley by Holmes on behalf of John McLoughlin. According to the notice, Riley owed McLaughlin the sum of one-thousand sixty-five dollars and forty-seven cents. The notice is signed by county clerk W. Holland.</p>
