Historical Note

The photographs in this collection, taken and compiled by an unidentified United States military serviceman in the early 1950s, depict the experience of enlisted soldiers as the trained to fight in the Korean War. Most of the photographs were taken in or around the Dugway Proving Grounds near Tooele, Utah. Dugway was established in 1942, closed in 1946 after the end of World War II, and was reopened in 1950 with the outbreak of the Korean War, and in 1954 it was made a permanent military facility. In 1958, the U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Weapons School was moved from Maryland to Dugway. Dugway is primarily known as a site for testing military weapons, especially chemical and biological weaponry.

These photographs provide insight into the little-known use of the Dugway Proving Grounds as a training facility during the Korean War. In addition to depicting Dugway and its surrounding landscape, the collection illustrates the leisure pursuits of enlisted men, including hiking and hunting for geodes. The unidentified soldier also photographed many scenic views in the area around Dugway, including South Willow Canyon near Tooele, Utah; Deseret Peak, west of Grantsville, Utah; Timpanagos Loop; Bountiful Peak; and Topaz Peak. In addition to the album, the collection contains several loose photographs depicting unidentified fire department buildings dating from the later 1950s or early 1960s.
