         <p>The Pettyjohn family were early settlers in the Walla Walla area. Jonathan Pettyjohn was born in Ohio on January 13, 1827, and later moved west with his family. He moved to Walla Walla county in 1859, and settled in Touchet valley. Sherman Pettyjohn was born to Jonathan and Hannah Pettyjohn on November 10, 1865 in Walla Walla county. Sherman's daughter, Margaret Pettyjohn, was born in Walla Walla on June 12, 1899 and died in July 1978.</p>

         <p>The Margaret Pettyjohn Collection consists of newspaper clippings, travel guides and brochures. This collection, which dates from 1852 through 1970, also contains historical society correspondence, a Pony Express route map, and notes about the Lamar family. There is also genealogical information, personal correspondence regarding employment, and daily journals. Photographs include images of Chief Bones, the dedication of McNary Dam, pioneer cabins, and the Pettyjohn schoolhouse.</p>
