Records of the
utility regarding several Chelan County power projects, especially the
construction of Rocky Reach Dam.
In 1936 a proposal to form a county-wide public utility district was
approved by voters of Chelan County for the purpose of providing electricity to
the citizens of the county. By 1949 the utility was serving more than 10,000
residential customers and 1600 commercial customers through the purchase of the
Chelan and Douglas County distribution system from Puget Sound Power &
Light Company.
The Public Utility District No. 1 of Chelan County is made of up three
hydroelectric dams -- Lake Chelan Dam, Rock Island Dam, and Rocky Reach Dam.
Lake Chelan Dam was completed in 1927 by Washington Water Power and acquired by
Chelan County PUD in 1955. The first dam on the Columbia River and twelve miles
downstream from the city of Wenatchee, Rock Island Dam was completed in 1933
and acquired by Chelan County PUD in 1953. The Rocky Reach Dam was finished in
1961 after five years of construction and is located on the Columbia River
seven miles upstream from the city of Wenatchee.
