      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">The Allen Ginsberg photograph collection consists of 4 strips of black and white negative film with 24 total individual images, a contact sheet, eight 8x10 enlargments from these individual negatives, and eight additional images from various stages of Ginsberg's life from the 1950s to the 1970s. All of the negatives appear to be from an unknown Ginsberg lecture on Buddhist Mantras. In some of the images Ginsberg is playing a harmonium.</abstract>

    <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
      <p>Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was one of the principle members of the Beat Generation in the 1950s and later an icon of the counter-culture movement in the 1960s. His poem, The Howl, is the best-known single work of the Beat Poets. He published a number of books of poetry receiving the National Book Award in 1974 for <emph>The Fall of America</emph>. Ginsberg was a practicing Buddhist who took part in numerous protests against imperialism, militarism, sexual repression, and censorship.</p>
