The collection contains photographs generated for use in the Washington State University annual student yearbook, Chinook, for 1974 through 1979. The types of photographs generated for publication in the Chinook include 6 x 6cm. color transparencies, 2 x 2" mounted color transparencies, and black and white negatives with corresponding contact prints. In most cases the color transparencies were of events on campus and of students and their activities. Also included were views of the campus and the Pullman area. The black and white negatives (and their contact prints), each of a student group or organization, were identified with the name of the group or organization and the specific date on the envelope.

Photographs generated for use in the annual student yearbook, Chinook, for 1974 through 1979 were transferred to the University Archives when the bulk of the collection was no longer useful to the Chinook staff. Since a large majority consisted of unlabelled multiple images of the same subject, only representative images were selected for retention. Following these guidelines the original accession was reduced by 75%.
