This collection includes Charles Wemple's Florence Home Guard
correspondence, records of orders, membership pledges and roll call lists, and
supply information, 1918-1920. On May 20, 1918, Charles B. Wemple of Florence,
Montana, wrote to Sam V. Stewart, governor of Montana, offering his
creditionals and requesting permission to organize and instruct a company of
home guards. Stewart responded with his informal approval. Wemple, serving as
captain and instructor, recruited local young men, organized the company and
held regular meetings with drilling through July and August of 1918. Some
equipment was ordered. In March 1919, Wemple sent his Florence Home Guard
honorable discharge form to Governor Stuart requesting the governor's
signature, as Wemple did not deem it appropriate to sign his own discharge.
