      <p>Reinhard G. Pauly (Aug. 9, 1920 - Sept. 26, 2019.) From 1935 to 1937 he studied violin at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin. After his father, director of the Saarbrücken Stadttheater, emigrated to Buenos Aires in 1935 and his mother was banned from working, Pauly, who belonged to Martin Niemöller's circle, emigrated to the USA in 1937. There he studied musicology at Columbia University, graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts. After being granted US citizenship, he served in the United States Army intelligence service during World War II. After the war he studied further and made his master's degree at Columbia in 1947. He received another Master's degree in violin from Yale University. In 1956 he received his doctorate on Michael Haydn's sacred choral music.</p>
      <p>He began teaching in 1948 at Lewis &amp; Clark College, where he was also a full professor in 1962. He taught there until his retirement in 1985. Further teaching activities included the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Reed College in Portland, Oregon . His best-known musicological work is Music in the Classic Period, which was published five times in the USA. He also wrote for some specialist magazines such as Musical Quarterly and the Salzburger Nachrichten.</p>
      <p>After teaching, Pauly was editor of the Amadeus Press in Portland and published over 40 musicological books.</p>
      <p>Musically he was active as a violinist and violist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Portland (now Oregon) Symphony Orchestra, the Portland Opera Orchestra, the Portland Baroque Orchestra and the Portland Festival Symphony</p>
