<p> Harry Kaplan was an accountant living and working in New York City in
the first half of the twentieth century. He was of Russian Jewish ancestry,
having been born the son of Russian immigrants. His wife, Betty, emigrated from
Russia as a small child with her family. Together they had two children,
		  Mildred and Herbert David. </p>

      <odd type="hist">
<p>Although this collection includes photographs of several Kaplan family
trips, the second series contains one photographer's view of Charles
Lindbergh's New York parade. Charles Lindbergh made the first successful solo
transatlantic flight in 1927, traveling from New York to Paris over the course
of 33 hours. His arrival in Paris on May 21st was greeted with throngs of
onlookers and much adulation. He was brought back to the United States on the
Navy cruiser <emph render="italic"> USS Memphis </emph>, and was greeted
enthusiastically in Washington D.C. President Calvin Coolidge conferred the
Distinguished Flying Cross on Lindbergh during the welcome ceremonies, and he
would go on to receive the Medal of Honor in December. On June 13th, New York
City held a parade to greet and honor him upon his arrival, and he was lauded
in person by both Mayor Jimmy Walker and Governor Al Smith. It is estimate that
200,000 people attended the New York ceremony held by Walker and Smith, and
that an additional 4,000,000 saw him and his parade as it traveled through the
		  city. </p>

<p>The collection is divided into three series, covering the 1925
California family trip, the 1927 Charles Lindbergh parade, and the 1935
California family trip. The photographs are arranged numerically according to
numbers listed on each photograph by a previous owner. These numbers follow the
chronology of the photographs, suggesting they were added by one of the
		  Kaplans.</p>

<p>The collection includes photographs from Kaplan family trips to
California, as well as photographs of the New York parade celebrating Charles
Lindbergh. The Kaplan's had two children, Mildred and Herbert David, although
only Mildred appears in this collection. Although census records place the
family in New York, it is clear that they traveled to California multiple
times, apparently on vacation, indicating that the Kaplans were relatively
well-off. Photographs from California trips consist of locations in and around
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Santa Catalina Island. Photographs from the New
York trip show the Charles Lindbergh parade passing through Madison Square on
		  June 13, 1927.</p>
