    <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
      <p>Clarence Daniel Martin was born in Cheney in 1886, and was the first Washington-born individual to become Governor of the State of Washington. He had two terms in office, from 1933 until 1941, and attempted to secure the nomination for a third time, but failed to do so. He retired to private life in Cheney, and passed away in 1955.</p>

      <p>This collections contains correspondence, diagrams, newsclippings, reports, and one photograph. The material is related to the appointment of members to the Board of Trustees of Eastern Washington College of Education (EWCE), and the apportionment of state funds for the construction of Hargreaves Library (later Hargreaves Hall) on the campus of EWCE (later Eastern Washington University).</p>
