In the early teens, architecture as a professional degree was offered at WSC. In
1916, the Washington state legislature passed a law which distributed professional
programs between UW and WSC, and architecture became under the purview of UW.
Non-degree courses in architecture were still offered, and by 1957, the College of
Engineering had a degree program called Architectural Engineering, which allowed
graduates the same route to architectural licensure as an accredited Architecture
degree in Washington State alone.

In 1963, the Washington State Legislature passed a law (senate bill 285) that
permitted Washington State University to offer degrees in both Architectural
Engineering or Architecture. By 1975, the Department offered three degrees: Bachelor
of Architecture, Architectural Studies, and Bachelor of Science in Building Theory
and Practice. The NAAB accredited five-year B. Architecture degree was replaced with
a one-year M. Architecture degree that directly followed the four-year unaccredited
Bachelor of Architecture degree. A two, and later three, year accredited Master of
Architecture followed.
