The student newspaper at Washington State University began publication in February, 1892, as the College Record. In 1893 the name was changed to the Evergreen, and it has been published under various derivations of that name ever since. Circa the 1930s, the Washington State University (the College) undertook a project through which a subject index of the early years of the Pullman city newspaper, the Herald, was created onto 3x5 cards. It is assumed that this index to the Evergreen and College Record was created at that same time, but this is not known for certain.

Articles from the Evergreen and College Record are summarized as one sentence blurbs, followed by volume, issue, date, and page number. They are maintained under an alphabetical subject/name organization with the summaries typed onto 3x5 cards, card each containing one to four entries.

The indexing appears to be fairly comprehensive from 1892 to about 1901; there is extensive indexing from 1901-1904 but it seems far from complete. A very few articles after 1904 are included as well, these occuring as late as 1950.
