Willard Marriott Library Special Collections Bill Wolverton digital photograph collection Wolverton, Bill P0796 253 digital images 1940-2008 The Bill Wolverton digtial photograph collection contains mostly images of the Glen Canyon and Lake Powell areas taken by Wolverton over the course of his career and showing various water levels, invasive species like Russian Olive, and other effects of the reservoir over time. Also included are images related to the railroad in the American West. English

Bill Wolverton worked as a mechanical engineer in Sacramento, California. He first came to the canyon country of southern Utah in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1988, he moved to Utah to work as a National Park Service ranger stationed at Glen Canyon. In this role, Wolverton dedicated himself to removing invasive plant species, with particular focus on the Russian Olive tree.

Working alone and with others, Wolverton cleared Russian olive and tamarisk from the Escalante river between the town of Escalante and Coyote Gulch just north of Lake Powell. After removal, Wolverton replaced them with native cottonwoods and willows. Wolverton's work is continued by conservationists at Grand Staircase Escalante Partners.

The collection was scanned 35mm slides that were retuned to Bill Wolverton. Caption information was proved by the donor in 2014. Bill Wolverton retains copyright of the images. The images in this collection depict photographs related to the Escalante River Valley, some documenting tamarisk and Russian olive encroachment and removal. Other images depict various water and sediment levels. These images span Wolverton's career as a Park Ranger and date from the 1980s to the 2000s. Folder 18 contains primarily images of railroad engines and cars in the American West dating from 1940-1960.
