Biography of Willard V. King

Willard V. King worked as an attorney in New York City and served on the Columbia University Board of Trustees. After he graduated with honors from Columbia University in 1889, King joined the Continental Trust Company of New York where he served in roles from secretary to vice president until 1904 when the company merged with the New York Security and Trust Company to create the New York Trust Company. King had continued to serve as vice president there until he was elected to serve as president of the Columbia Trust Company in 1908, shortly after the Panic of 1907. In 1909, King was appointed as a member of the Commission on Speculation to investigate the New York Stock Exchange. When the Columbia-Knickerbocker Trust Company formed in 1912, King served as its first president.

King was known to be extremely active in the city, serving as director of the Brunswick Terminal and Railway Company, Columbia Trust Company, and City Land Improvement Company. He also became a member of the Chamber of Commerce of New York as well as the New York Trust Companies Association, and he served as treasurer for both the New Association for the Blind and the American School of Classical Studies in Rome.

The American Heritage Center aspires to approach all areas of our work in ways that are

respectful to those who create, use, and are represented in our collections. For a variety of

reasons, however, users may encounter offensive or harmful language or images in some of our
