History of University of Wyoming. Petroleum and Chemical Engineering

The University of Wyoming's Petroleum and Chemical Engineering Department is part of the College of Engineering and Applied Science. It was officially established as a joint unit in 1966. Petroleum engineering courses were first included in the UW course catalog in 1926 under the Mining Engineering Division and later in the General Engineering Department in 1934. It was set as its own department in 1960 until it was officially combined with chemical engineering in 1966.

Chemical engineering courses were first added to the UW's course catalog from 1930 to 1932, but were later dropped due to lack of student interest. Chemical engineering courses were later included in the General Engineering Department and was eventually combined with petroleum engineering in 1966 to become the Petroleum and Chemical Engineering Department.

The joint department was separated, renamed, reformed, and separated again. As of 2016, the two subject areas are separate and are known as the Department of Petroleum Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering prepares students to face a fluctuating field of oil exploration and development. The Department of Chemical Engineering offers curriculum concentrations in bioengineering, petroleum engineering, and environmental engineering.
