			<p>Xerpha Mae McCullough was born in Wisconsin in 1891 and moved to Washington with her
				family in 1900. She married Edward Franklin Gaines, later a prominent agronomist at
				Washington State University, in 1912. In 1930 she graduated from Washington State
				University. She later worked for the university as a herbarium technician. Xerpha
				Gaines died in Spokane, in 1970.</p>

			<p>Correspondence, notes and drafts regarding research and publication of two of the
				published botanical works of Xerpha M. Gaines. The bulk of the correspondence
				regarding "A botanical survey of the Grand Coulee-Eastern Washington," Research
				Studies, 25 (1957) 207-235 is with her co-author, Theodore H. Scheffer. Her second
				work, Weeds of Eastern Washington and Adjacent Areas (Davenport, Camp Na-Bor-Lee
				Association, 1972) was co-written with Dean G. Swan.</p>
