      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
         <p>The funded project, "Ethnobotany of the Upland Mayo," was begun on Sept. 21, 1993 with an expedition to the foothills of the Sierra de Alamos, at the village of Teachive de Masiaca. Teachive is a traditional Mayo settlement associated with the largely Mexicanized town of Masiaca. Eight days were spent, seven in the field. Five Mayo consultants were retained. I was accompanied by Dr. Thomas Van Devender, Director of Research of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Lic. Rigoberto Lopez, ethnobotanist from the University of Sonora. We collected and identified 199 ethnobotanical specimens representing 140 plant species. We also identified Mayo villages in different habitats which must be visited. Through our consultants from the Mayo village, we now have names of other consultants who will be contacted in the near future. On Nov. 1, 1993 I visited the village of Teachive once again to verify some of the data. At that time I began interviews with two Mayo women to ascertain their application and preparations of the plants brought to them by the male consultants. Another aspect of the project has thus been undertaken.</p>
