Carrol B. Howe was born in Brownsville, Oregon. Carrol Howe graduated from Southern Oregon Normal School in 1930 and moved to Klamath Falls where he worked at Henley High School. There Carrol Howe became a Principal (1936-1949) and the Head Football Coach for eight years. He was the Coach of the 1946 State B Football Championship team. He served as Superintendent of Klamath County schools from 1948 to 1960, and as state representative from Klamath County from 1960 to 1972. Carrol Howe was active in several local organizations, including the Shaw Historical Library, the Lava Beds Natural History Association and the Oregon Archaeological Society. He was a Crater Lake National History Association board member from 1982 to 1987. Carrol Howe took up farming after retirement, maintaining a keen interest in the Klamath County’s archeology and history. He expressed that interest by researching and writing several books, including “Sagebrush to Shakespeare,” “Frontier Stories of the Klamath Country,” and “Ancient Modocs of California and Oregon.” Carrol and his wife Marjorie established a trust fund that makes annual distributions to the Klamath County Museum and to Southern Oregon University.
