The Fortnightly Club of Eugene was organized in December, 1893 by Dr. Alice Hall Chapman, wife of the second president of the University of Oregon. She was the first president of the original group of twenty two members, generally conceded to be the first women's study club west of the Rockies. In 1895, although always a study club, The Fortnightly Club began its first move toward what became a continued dedication: providing and supporting desirable library facilities for Eugene. Members work on a volunteer basis.
