In 2023, the University of Montana established a Book Arts Program which utilizes a test press for teaching opportunities. This press, since named the Bear Scratch Press, produces student works and limited productions for university related events and materials. The first practicum class utilizing the press occurred in the Fall of 2023.
This collection contains artist-proofs of prints created by the University of Montana’s Bear Scratch Press.
Researchers must use collection in accordance with the policies of Archives and Special Collections, the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, and the University of Montana-Missoula.

The materials in this collection were created by the University of Montana's Bear Scratch Press and were in the custody of David Axelrod (founder of Bear Scratch Press and Professor of Letterpress Printing) until their transfer to Archives and Special Collection.
University of Montana professor David Axelrod transferred the materials to Archives and Special Collections in September of 2023 and February of 2025.
Future additions to the collection are expected.
During processing, materials were housed in an archival-grade folder.
