  	<head>Biography of Richard Owen Boyer and Sophia Ripley Ames</head>
      <p>Richard and Sophia Boyer were husband and wife journalists and authors. Richard Boyer worked for several newspaper and magazines, including "The New Yorker," "The New York Herald Tribune," "The St. Louis Post Dispatch," "The Boston Herald," and "New Masses," a Communist magazine.  In addition, he authored books on American labor and John Brown.</p>
      <p>Sophia Boyer wrote under her maiden name, Sophia Ripley Ames, for various periodicals and authored the nonfiction juvenile book "Nkrumah of Ghana," an autobiography on the Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah. She was also the financial secretary of the Norwalk (CT) Workers Club of the Communist Party.</p>

      <p>The collection contains the professional materials of the journalists Richard Boyer and Sophia Boyer. Specific materials include Richard Boyer's research files for his book, "The Legend of John Brown"; Sophia Boyer's research files for her book, "Nkrumah of Ghana"; contracts with publishers; financial records; and articles written by both Boyers.</p>
