The Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections department (MASC) of WSU Libraries
hosted a conference called "Beginning the Second Century in America: Germans from
Russia in the Pacific Northwest" in October 1984. Two prior conference had been
held, in 1980 and 1982. The 1984 conference preceded the July 1985 national
convention of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia held in Yakima.
MASC offered recordings from the WSU conference for borrowing "as you prepare for
the national AHSGR meeting in Yakima this summer" (MASC brochure).

The conferences combined formal talks with other activities including folk dancing
and arts and crafts displays. The 1984 conference, which the recordings in this
collection document, featured cultural events on Friday night, followed by talks on
Saturday by: Thomas Edwards of Whitman College; Richard Scheuerman, author of a
number of works on Germans from Russia in the Pacific Northwest; Eva Lindemann,
Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Seattle; and Joseph Voyles of the
University of Washington. Endicott, a Palouse town settled by Russian Germans in the
late 19th century, hosted Sunday's events that included a church service in the
town's Trinity Lutheran church followed by a German dinner and lecture delivered by
Mr. Scheuerman on the town's history.

<scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_" id="a3">

WSU Instructional Telecommunications recorded the three-day conference and produced
the media offered for sale, four audio cassettes, and for loan, two video cassettes
in either 1/2" VHS or 3/4" Umatic formats. The audio cassettes preserved separate
talks by Thomas Edwards, Richard Scheuerman, Eva Lindemann, and Joseph Voyles. The
first video cassette compiled highlights from the three days of the conference. The
second documented a panel discussion among Lindemann, Scheuerman, and Voyles and
moderated by John Guido, head of MASC.

Among the media in the collection are original video recordings (3/4" Umatic) of the
proceedings from which Instructional Telecommunications created the compilation tape
including additional footage preserved on the small camera-sized cassettes. An
additional video cassette is unrelated to the conference, but was created in 1998 by
the students in an "Intermediate German" class (German 304) and entitled Die
Deutsche Geschichte der Palouse. In German, it reviews some of the history of
Germans who settled in the Palouse region and includes an interview with Richard
Scheuerman.

The media in the collection are recordings: 8 standard 1/8" audio cassettes; 3 1/2"
VHS video cassettes; 12 3/4" Umatic standard video cassettes (8 5/8"x5 3/8" x 1
3/16"); and 3 3/4" Umatic small video cassettes (7 1/4" x 4 5/8" x 1 3/16").

The papers in the collection are arranged chronologically, and primarily document
each individual conerence: programs, photographs, grant/planning documentation,
press materials, and information about attendance. Additional materials deal with
development of a library collection dealing with Germans from Russia, and planning
and execution of the creation of the media found here.
