The National Negro Business League was founded by Booker T. Washington in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900 with the goal to enhance the commercial and economic prosperity of the African American community. Washington believed that the solution to the issue of racial discrimination was primarily economic and that African American entrepreneurship was vital. He founded the league to further the economic development of African American businesses and its members included doctors, lawyers, farmers, small business owners, and other professionals. The league was renamed as the National Business League in 1966 and remains in operation today.
