John Fitch Kinney was born in New York in 1816. He studied law there until he moved to the western United States. He practiced in Ohio and Iowa and served as a supreme court judge. He served as Utah's supreme court chief justice and was elected congressman in 1863. He was also a U.S. commissioner of Indian affairs.
The John Fitch Kinney autobiography (circa 1863) was written by Kinney (b. 1816), a chief justice and congressman of Utah during the 1850s-1860s. The folder contains a brief biographical sketch that mentions the autobiography was written for purposes of his election as a delegate to Congress.

The original biographical sketch has been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the item if being used. Photocopies are available in the collection for research use.
