The collection contains supporting materials for thirteen books, article and short story manuscripts, personal and business correspondence, and Crowell-Collier Publishing company material consisting of inter-office memos, financial, promotional material, and the professional and personal papers of Don Marquis.</abstract> <origination label="creator"> <persname source="lcnaf" encodinganalog="100">Anthony, Edward, 1895-1971</persname> <persname source="lcnaf" encodinganalog="100">Marquis, Don, 1878-1937</persname> </origination> </did> <arrangement encodinganalog="351"> <p>Collection is organized into the following series: August 1972 donation, January 1974 Addenda, October 1974 Addenda, and December 1979 Addenda.</p> <p>Material within this collection has been organized by accession. This organization reflects the fact that the collection has been acquired in increments over time. This organization is also based on the decision not to merge the various accessions and organize them as a whole at this point in time, give the fact that future accruals are anticipated and/or that this organization is deemed sufficient for access.</p> <p>Researchers should note that materials within a series or accession may overlap and/or relate to materials found in other accessions or initially processed materials. For example, correspondence may be found in all or only some groupings. In order to locate all relevant material within this collection, researchers may need to consult each accession.</p> <p>Researchers should also note that similar materials can be arranged differently in each accession, depending on how the material is organized upon receipt or during initial processing. He served in the war and was stationed at Camp Merritt from 1918-1919. After the war he worked for the <emph render="italic">New York Herald</emph> until 1923 when he became associate editor of <emph render="italic">Farm and Fireside</emph>e, a Crowell magazine. In 1928 he directed the publicity for Herbert Hoover's Presidential campaign. Shortly after Anthony married Esther H. Howard and had one son, Richard.</p> <p>Afterward the campaign he contined to work for Crowell, first on staff at <emph render="italic">American Magazine</emph> and then serving as the press service director of the Crowell group of magazines from 1930-1942. In 1942 he was publisher of <emph render="italic">Woman's Home Companion</emph> for ten years and then continued as publisher of Collier's From 1949-1954.</p> <p>After leaving Collier's, Anthony joined the Seventh Company, Inc., a New York statistical research organization, as public affairs counsellor. Anthony was also a consultant to <emph render="italic">American Girl Magainze</emph> for 25 years and acted as director of public relations for the War Advertising Council during World War II.</p> <p>In addition to working in publishing Athony wrote short stories, plays, magazine articles, verse, and books. He collaborated with big names in the animal field, Frank Buck, Clyde Beatty, and Henry Trefflich, wrote a detailed biography of Don Marquis, an autobiography, and eleven other books.
