Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Hubert Gwinn was born on April 9, 1892 in Stevensville, Montana, and Edith Merrifield was born on January 1, 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. Both Hubert and Edith attended the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, in the early 1910s. In October of 1916, Hubert and Edith married in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Together they had five children named James, Alan, William, Philip, and Betty. Following two years of study at the University of Montana, Hubert enrolled at the Armour Institute in Chicago to study mechanical engineering. After finishing his schooling, Hubert opened an automotive repair shop called the Motor Inn Garage, which he later renamed Gwinn’s Garage. His business was located on corner of South 3rd and Orange Street in Missoula, Montana. In the 1920s, the Gwinn family relocated to Los Angeles, California where Hubert died on November 17, 1954 and Edith died on December 12, 1986.

This collection contains photographs of the University of Montana’s campus and student body during the 1910s. Also included are photographs of Missoula, Montana and the surrounding areas. Some noteworthy photographs include pictures of the 1913 Florence Hotel fire and images of university students placing a wooden “M” on Mount Sentinel above Missoula, Montana, circa 1915. Most of the photographs are mounted on loose pages that were originally bound together in an album. Many photographs are unidentified.

Betty Gwinn, daughter of Hubert and Edith Gwinn, previously held this collection until she donated it to the University of Montana Archives and Special Collections in 1993.

Betty Gwinn donated these materials to the University of Montana in June 1993.

Processing Note

Sticky notes written by donor Betty Gwinn containing information about the photographs were removed in processing to help preserve the integrity of the original images. Where Betty Gwinn was able to provide positive identification of people and places, the information was transcribed to folder titles. The donor’s original order was maintained in processing.
