      <abstract encodinganalog="description">The Howard D. Johnson papers (1946-1985) contain newsletters, publications, clippings, and biographical materials.  Howard Johnson was a developer of the ceilometer, president of KNAK radio and founder of KOVO radio stations in Utah and a meteorologist.</abstract>

    <bioghist encodinganalog="description">
      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>Howard D. Johnson was born September 4, 1910, Richfield, Utah.  Johnson was responsible for putting more than 30 radio stations on the air in the Intermountain West.  He was part owner of KVEL radio in Vernal for 32 years, KNAK in Salt Lake City and KSUB/KSSD in Cedar City.</p>
      <p>Johnson was elected into the Utah Broadcasters Hall of Fame in January 1982.  He served as chairman of the board of Southern Utah Broadcasting Co., was a member of the Broadcast Pioneers and a senior boardcast engineer with the Society of Broadcast Engineers based in Washington D. C.</p>
      <p>He worked as a meterologist for the U.S. Government Weather Bureau during World War II and as an eletrical engineer at the Univeristy of Utah from 1952 to 1970, where he coordinated Army contracts.</p>
      <p>He died August 5, 1989.</p>
