Dennis Boxell formed the Koleda Ethnic Dance Ensemble of the University of Washington in 1967. Boxell was a folklorist, specializing in Balkan culture. Koleda was named after a Balkan spring festival, and the dances came from Yugoslavia, Greece, and Bulgaria. Yugoslavia invited the group to tour Europe in 1968. The group disbanded in 1974.

Silent Dance- When the Balkan countries were under Ottoman rule, people performed this dance in secretive silence to preserve their culture. This dance was supposed to display the health of the women dancers by testing their stamina; if the women passed the test, they were fit enough to be a wife.
