Historical Note:

At the time that it gained land grant status in 1868, Oregon State
University (then Corvallis College) was a typical liberal arts college of
the day. As the college's curriculum expanded into the sciences and
technology in the early 20th century, the liberal arts were de-emphasized;
they were grouped in to the Division of Service Departments. In 1919, the
division was renamed the School of Basic Arts and Sciences. With the
reorganization of Oregon's public higher education in 1932, the liberal
arts at OSU were de-emphasized further. The ensuing Lower Division was
limited to freshman and sophomore level courses.

After World War II, President A. L. Strand pushed to expand the liberal
arts at the college. In 1959, divisional majors in humanities and social
sciences were offered for the first time, and in 1961 the School of
Humanities and Social Sciences was established. Various degree programs
were developed in the 1960s. In 1973, the school became the College of
Liberal Arts.

Gordon Gilkey served as the first Dean of the School of Humanities and
Social Sciences, a position he held until his retirement in 1978; David J.
King was Dean of the College from 1978 until 1982; Bill Wilkins served as
Dean from 1982 until his retirement in 1994.

The College of Liberal Arts Records consist of records of the Dean's
Office as well the records of several individual departments and academic
programs in the College. The records primarily document the liberal arts
curriculum at Oregon State University; publications by faculty; and
conferences, lectures, and special events sponsored by the College.

Records of the American Studies Program and the Departments of Art,
Anthopology, Economics, English, History, and Sociology are included in
this collection.

Of special note in the Dean's Office records are reports from a 1974
Board of Visitors to the College; materials pertaining to the retirement
celebration for Dean Bill Wilkins in 1994; and student credit hour reports
for the late 1970s through 1980s.

The Economics Department records consist of publications by faculty and
include multiple publications by Thomas D. Bible; Lafayette G. Harter,
Jr.; B. Starr McMullen; R. Charles Vars, Jr.; and Murray Wolfson. Several
of the publication pertain to the economics of forestry and wood
products.

The English Department records include a text on report writing by J.F.
Ligon and the proceedings of the Summer Conference on Science Writing.

In addition to department annual reports, the Sociology Department
materials include a reading packet for a course on

Gender and Sexuality in Popular Culture

taught by Dwaine Plaza and Kathleen Stanley.

The History Department records include a substantive file documenting
the visit of Paul C. Warnke to OSU in 1983 to deliver the Ava Helen
Pauling Lectureship for World Peace and papers written by students in
History 310 pertaining to a variety of OSU-related topics using primary
sources in the OSU Archives.

Of note in the Anthropology Department records are an historic register
nomination for Waldo Hall prepared in 1996 and a report of an
archeological excavation conducted in downtown Corvallis in 2001. The Art
Department records include data summaries provided by the Higher Education
Arts Data Services (HEADS) Project that provides detailed information on
the arts in higher education. The data include enrollment, degrees
offered, operational budgets, and faculty salaries.

The microfilmed records include correspondence and related materials
documenting the Oregon State Penitentiary University which offered
college-level courses to inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary taught
by OSU faculty.
