Albert Bates Lord (1912-1991) was a scholar of Slavic and comparative literature from Boston, Massachusetts. He earned a degree from Harvard College in classics in 1934 and a PhD in comparative literature in 1949. He worked as a professor Slavic and comparative literature at Harvard from 1950 until his retirement in 1983. During his time there, he founded the Committee on Degrees in Folklore and Mythology. He was known for his work on ancient epics from Europe and Asia and his research into oral composition.
Milman Parry (1902-1935) was a scholar of epic poetry from Los Angeles, California. He earned his BA and MA from the University of California, Berkeley and his PhD from Sorbonne. From 1933 to 1935, Parry traveled to Yugoslavia to study Serbo-Croat traditional oral poetry. He is famous for creating the discipline of oral tradition.
