Frederick George Bell was born on September 26, 1857 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He immigrated to the United States in 1878 and settled in the mining town of Elkhorn, Montana by 1886. Bell worked as a blacksmith and owned Elkhorn’s livery stable. He also served as the postmaster for a short time before joining a mining venture that launched the Elkhorn Bulwer Copper Mining Company in 1913. In 1896, he married Frances Ivey, and they had three sons. Bell died on December 13, 1938. One of his sons, Fred Washington Bell (1898-1978), was a devoted collector of Elkhorn history and helped preserve the structures that form present-day Elkhorn Ghost Town.

The Frederick G. Bell Photographs feature the mining town of Elkhorn, Montana circa 1910. Farming photos and images of Bell's blacksmith and livery operations are prominent highlights of the collection. Other photos show the Bell family and members of the local fraternity.

Custodial history for this collection is unknown.

The University of Montana acquired the the photographs in this collection in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Fred Washington Bell, son of Fred G. Bell, actively worked to preserve Elkhorn, Montana, history, and it is likely that he was the donor of the material.

Captions were most likely provided by Fred Washington Bell and were transcribed when available. The University of Montana’s Archives assigned photo numbers to the images in the 1970s and placed the images into its general photo collection. In 2021, the photos were processed as Mss 303.
