Siegfried "Zig" Engelmann co-developed the Direct Instruction model as part of the federally-funded Project Follow Through. He was born on November 26, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1955. His interest in early childhood education led to involvement with Project Follow Through, a federally-funded educational experiment beginning in 1967 by the United States Department of Education and the Office of Economic Opportunity. The experiment focused on developing early childhood education instructional models. The Direct Instruction model was co-developed by Engelmann, and Wes Becker, a psychology professor. The Engelmann-Becker team joined the Project Follow Through sponsorship at the University of Illinois. In 1970, the team joined the University of Oregon College of Education, and Engelmann became a Professor of Special Education. He established the National Institute of Direct Instruction (NIFDI), and is the author of 19 books, including The Theory of Instruction. Engelmann passed away on February 15, 2019.
