         <p>The 158 Club was founded in 1949 when Frederick Santler, graduate manager and a professor at Whitman College, noted that paid attendance at a football game was 158 people. He stated that "it looked like the beginning of the end for intercollegiate athletics at Whitman." Once the club was established, it dedicated itself to raising funds to support Whitman athletes in their endeavours by funding partial scholarships.</p>

         <p>The 158 Club Records, which date from 1949 through 1979, contains correspondence, membership rosters, and financial records of the club and the Seattle Linebackers, another group of former Whitman football players.</p>
