			<p>V. Lane Rawlins (1937-) was inaugurated as the 9th president of Washington State
				University on March 28, 2001. He served until 2007. He had previously been an
				Economics professor and administrator at WSU from 1968 to 1988.</p>

			<p>The functions and duties of the Washington State University President are defined in
				University Faculty Manual, edition of 1987, as: In addition to being designated as
				secretary ex officio of the Board of Regents, the President as general agent of the
				Board is the chief executive officer of Washington State University. The President
				administers the policies approved by the Board of Regents, serves as advisor to the
				Board on policies and operations and is the agent through whom representations to
				the Board are regularly made. Other functions of the chief executive officer
				include: Leadership in developing policies and organization for teaching, research,
				and extension programs. Public administration of the University, including
				representation before the Legislature and other state agencies. Responsibility for
				the general welfare of students; the development, operation and maintenance of
				buildings, lands and equipment; financial matters pertaining to development,
				operation and maintenance of University; and the administration of regulations
				adopted by the Board of Regents. Responsibility, delegated by the Board of Regents,
				for all appointments, promotion, salaries, leaves, resignations, and dismissals.
				Presiding at meetings of the general faculty.</p>

			<p>The collection consists of approximately one hundred letters and certificates,
				primarily from the presidents of other institutions, congratulating V. Lane Rawlins
				on his inauguration as the 9th president of Washington State University. Also
				present are materials related to the Faculty Honors Convocation which hosted his
				inauguration, and a Retired Faculty Luncheon at the same time.</p>

			<p>This is an unprocessed collection. Any arrangement reflects either a pre-existing
				order from the records' creators or previous custodians, or preliminary sorting

			<p>Kristi Tattershall of the Office of the President donated this collection to the
				Washington State University Libraries on July 23, 2021, where they were retained as
				UA2021-10.</p>

	 <processinfo encodinganalog="583" id="a20"> 
			<p>University Archivist Mark O’English accessioned this collection in Dec. 2021. A
				variety of newspaper and magazine articles were not retained, and many of the
				certificates came in frames which were also discarded. As the MASC will likely
				eventually receive papers from Rawlins’ tenure as president, we suggest leaving
				these unprocessed and eventually jointly processing this with those.</p>
