      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2">
         <p>Born in Bavaria, Germany in 1841, Caroline Rosenberg Kline Galland
		  became an early and important Seattle Jewish philanthropist. It was said that
		  she never turned down a request for help. Individuals and charitable
		  organizations of many faiths, particularly those concerned with the care of the
		  elderly and infirm, benefitted from her generosity. </p>
         <p>Her first marriage was to Louis (Lazarus) Kline, a partner in a
		  Seattle clothing firm. He died April 15, 1884. Her second marriage was to
		  Bonham Galland, a retired merchant from San Francisco. Bonham was a Seattle
		  pioneer and well-known Jewish philanthropist whose will established a trust for
		  the construction and maintenance of an orphanage for homeless Jewish children
		  known as the Galland Nursery School. Caroline had no children, and devoted her
		  considerable energy and wealth to serving the poor of Seattle.</p>
         <p>Caroline died February 13th, 1907, at the age of 65. In her last will
		  and testament, in which she bequeathed a million and a half dollars to various
		  charities, including a tuberculosis hospital. Caroline wrote, "It is my desire
		  that the Caroline Kline Galland Home for the Aged be so constructed and managed
		  that it may bring to the lives of the aged men and women who shall be domiciled
		  therein the greatest degree of contentment and happiness in their declining
		  years."</p>
      </bioghist>
      <odd type="hist">
         <p>The Caroline Kline Galland Home for the Aged was constructed on the
		  Wildwood property in Seward Park on the shores of Lake Washington. It opened in
		  1914 as a Jewish nursing facility and old age home. The original Caroline Kline
		  Galland Home occupied what had been the Dutton residence. The capacity was
		  seven residents, and the home had a waiting list before it even opened. The
		  will provided funds for expansion, and an architect drew up plans in 1922, but
		  the city of Seattle refused to modify zoning ordinances to permit construction.
		  In 1930, after a lengthy legal battle regarding Seattle zoning laws, a new
		  facility was constructed to accommodate 25 residents. A second wing was
		  constructed in 1939, allowing for resident capacity of 35.</p>
         <p>Additions were made until 1964 when the state determined the building
		  was antiquated and unable to adquately meet the needs of its residents. Under
		  the fundraising leadership of Sol Esfeld, $1.1 million was raised to build a
		  new facility with residential capacity for 75 residents and it was dedicated in
		  1967. The name was formally changed to Caroline Kline Galland Home in 1975. In
		  1976, a two-story addition, costing $2.7 million and designed by Joyce,
		  Copeland, Vaughan &amp; Nordfors, substantially expanded the available square
		  footage. The main building would be used for mentally impaired residents and
		  include a therapy room and resident lounge. The addition also allowed for a
		  dining room on each floor and an additional 57 rooms in the facility, doubling
		  the overall capacity to 140. </p>
         <p>Today, the Caroline Kline Galland Home is a 205-bed nursing facility
		  providing medical services, enhanced social, religious and cultural programs,
		  strictly kosher meals, and a Jewish environment. Caroline's vision and
		  compassion still prevail at Kline Galland, a not-for-profit, mission-based
		  organization within the Seattle Jewish community.</p>
