Brookings, Oregon, had its origins in Native American villages and, in the 1850s, gold mining. In 1900, the land was acquired by William Ward in the name of the Brookings Box and Lumber Company of St. Louis, Missouri (later merged with the California and Oregon Lumber Company).

Collection includes typescript "General Scheme for Development," 1933, by W. J. Ward, regarding a plan to develop the area around Chetco Cove and Brookings; typescript history of the area and the Brookings Timber and Land Company, 7 pages, circa 1940, with description.
