Trip diaries include descriptions of travel on the Salmon and Snake rivers in 1936; the Colorado River in 1937 and 1938; and a trip across the continent via the Snake, Yellowstone, Missouri, and Ohio rivers in 1939.

Most of the diaries are labeled with the name and dates of the trip.

Related papers consist of a short biographical story about Holmstrom written by Frances Holmstrom (possibly his mother), and a bound transcription of some of Homstrom's trip diaries, by Brad Dimock (1996).
