The Northwest Women's Studies Association was organized in 1977, and
became a regional arm of the National Women's Studies Association when the
national branch was founded in 1978. The Northwest Women's Studies Association
seeks to develop and support college-level women's studies programs, and also
to improve the education of women. The organization attempts to involve
feminist leaders not only in the academic world, but also within the community.
The group is interested in feminist issues, as well how and where these issues
intersect with class and race issues.

On April 26-29, 1984, the Northwest Women's Studies Association held a
conference entitled "Holding Our Own and Breaking New Ground" at Western
Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. The event was coordinated by
the Western Washington Branch of the Northwest Women's Studies Association, led
by Chris Pastorino of Western Washington University's Women's Studies program,
and Kathryn Anderson, head of Fairhaven College's Women's Studies program. The
conference focused on the impact of conservative trends on feminism and women's
studies during the 1980s. Along with many workshops relating to women's issues
in health, work, and family, the conference program also included several
keynote speakers, including Catharine Stimpson, LaDonna Harris, and Margaret
Benston. Margie Adam, Linda Allen, and the band Motherlode also performed, and
Judy Chicago's <emph render="italic">Birth Project</emph> was shown for the
first time in the Northwest. As part of the conference, the Western States
Project on Women in Curriculum held a pre-conference, as well as concurrent
sessions on integrating women into college curriculum.

Records include planning, grant application materials and other
resources relating to the organizational of the Northwest Women's Studies
Association's 1984 conference in Bellingham, Washington. The conference was
entitled "Holding Our Own and Breaking New Ground." The collection also
contains reference materials regarding women's issues, and informational
resources from Western Washington University's Women's Studies program.

A large portion of the records appear to have been generated by
conference organizers Chris Pastorino and Kathryn Anderson. These records
include agendas for planning meetings, a budget for the conference, information
relating to speakers and performers, and other related planning material. The
collection also contains applications for grants to fund the conference and a
pre-conference symposium for the Western States Project on Women in Curriculum.

Exhibit and resource materials comprise newsletters, catalogs, and
other printed material relating to feminism and women's studies. It appears
that many of these materials were on display at the conference as informational
resources. There are also résumés and curriculum vitae for speakers and
performers at the conference, including Catharine Stimpson, Margaret Benston,
LaDonna Harris, Linda Allen, Donna Langston, Rebecca Meloy, and Kate
Jobe-Withner.

The collection also contains a small amount of material related to the
Women's Studies program at Fairhaven College and Western Washington University.
Included among these documents is a budget for 1983/1984, an article by Chris
Pastorino, and a request for information about the school to publish in a
Northwest Women's Report articles on women's studies programs in the Northwest.
There are also materials related to the National Women's Studies Association
conference attended by Chris Pastorino in 1983.
