School of LawThe Univeristy of Washington School of Law can be traced back to 1885
when the Board of Regents adopted the resolution to establish a law department.
The department opened in 1899 while the University was still located in
downtown Seattle. John T. Condon was appointed the first dean and the only
full-time professor. The first class had at least 34 students including a
student of African-American heritage, a Japanese student and three women. In
1901 the first graduating class consisted of twelve students. The University
became a member of the Association of American Law Schools in 1909 and became
accredited by the American Bar Association in 1924.
The department moved to Condon Hall in 1933, later moving in 1974 to
the second Condon Hall on Campus Parkway. In 2003 the law school and the Marian
Gould Gallagher Law Library move back to the main campus into the new William
H. Gates Hall.
